Southern Circuit Best: Jun to Oct Hippos and buffalo herds in a remote park
Katavi National Park is one of Tanzania's most remote parks, with open plains, miombo woodland and seasonal floodplains. It is quiet and wild, and a good choice for travellers who want to be far from the crowds.

- Katavi Region, western Tanzania
- Best time
- Jun to Oct
- Known for
- Hippos and buffalo herds in a remote park
Wildlife & Animals
In the dry season, large herds of buffalo and groups of hippos crowd around the shrinking water of the Katuma River and the floodplains. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, lions and crocodiles are also seen.
Best Time To Visit
The dry season from June to October is the best time, when wildlife gathers around the remaining water. The park is hard to reach during the heavy rains.
Getting There
Katavi is reached mostly by light aircraft from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or other western parks. Roads are rough, so most visitors fly.
