Wildlife & Animals
Herds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River in the dry season, joined by zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe and impala. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are present, and tree-climbing pythons are sometimes seen.
The landscape of baobabs, acacia and open grassland is distinctive and very photogenic.
Birds
Tarangire has more than 500 bird species, among the highest counts of any Tanzanian park. Look for yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills, ostriches and many raptors.
Best Time To Visit
The dry season from June to October is the best time, when animals concentrate along the river. From November to May the wildlife spreads out across the wider ecosystem, but the park is green and good for birding.
Weather & Climate
Days are warm to hot and nights are mild. The long rains from March to May bring the heaviest showers.
Getting There
Tarangire is about two to three hours by road from Arusha, so it is a popular first stop on a Northern Circuit safari and also suits a short trip.
