Tanzania's islands are a natural way to end a safari. White sand, warm water and coral reefs are a short flight or boat ride from the mainland, and each island has its own character.
Island 1
Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar Island, also called Unguja, is the best known island in the archipelago. Stone Town has narrow lanes and carved doors, spice farms cover the interior, and long white beaches line the north and east coasts.
Island 2
Changuu Island
Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is a short boat ride from Stone Town. It is known for its giant Aldabra tortoises and old buildings, and the reef around it is good for snorkelling.
Island 3
Pemba Island
Pemba Island lies north of Zanzibar. It is greener and hillier than Zanzibar, with clove plantations, small villages and deep channels with steep reef walls that attract divers.
Island 4
Mnemba Island
Mnemba Island is a small island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, surrounded by a coral reef. Boat trips from Nungwi and Matemwe visit the reef for snorkelling and diving, and dolphins are often seen on the way.
Island 5
Mafia Island
Mafia Island lies south of Zanzibar and is much quieter. Its marine park protects reefs that are good for diving and snorkelling, and whale sharks are seen in some months.
Island 6
Chumbe Island
Chumbe Island is a small coral island near Zanzibar that is protected as a marine sanctuary. Its healthy reef is easy to snorkel and it suits a quiet day away from the main beaches.
