Ruaha National Park
Tanzania
Ruaha National Park is one of the largest parks in Tanzania and sees far fewer visitors than the north. Rugged hills, baobab trees and the Great Ruaha River create a wild setting for a safari.
- Location
- Iringa Region, southern Tanzania
- Best time
- Jun to Oct
- Known for
- Big landscapes and large lion prides
Wildlife & Animals
Ruaha is known for its lions, elephants and buffalo, and for antelope that are harder to find elsewhere, such as greater kudu and sable and roan antelope. African wild dogs are sometimes seen, and leopards and cheetahs live here too.
Birds
More than 500 bird species have been recorded, including many species of the dry woodland and the river.
Best Time To Visit
The dry season from June to October is the best time. As water dries up, animals gather along the Great Ruaha River and sightings improve.
Getting There
Most visitors fly to Ruaha from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or other southern parks. It can also be reached by road from Iringa, which takes a few hours.
